Designing our Walk-In Closet

Designing our Walk-In Closet

Are we spoiled?  Yes.  Do we know it?  Yes.  But hey, if you move into a 4 bedroom house and are currently a DINK couple (double-income-no-kids) or a DINKWAD couple (double-income-no-kids-with-a-dog), you can certainly justify allowing a bedroom to operate as a walk-in closet- right?  Well, at least we can!  (p.s. we are currently a DINKWAC couple – double-income-no-kids-with-a-cat 🙂 – Enter: Designing our Walk-In Closet

Although I drool over custom closet systems with everything gorgeous, matching and perfectly retrofit for the space, we will be doing our master closet DIY-style with using the pieces we currently have and designing the space to work for us, without breaking the bank.  (But really, Pinterest closets are just jaw-droppingly amazing, like this here, *swoon*):

Ok maybe that’s over the top…. still fun to look at.

If you recall our tiny house we did the same, although that room was arguably too small to be a bedroom anyway.  Now, we are starting from scratch using the bedroom across from our master to be a walk-in closet.  The room is a good size, about 9’x11’.  Move in weekend we tackled the scary-bright lime green walls and painted them Benjamin Moore’s Sweatshirt Gray (so appropriate for a closet!)  We love how it turned out.  Covering the lime green only took 1 coat of Kils primer and one coat of Sweatshirt Gray.  We are keeping the carpet (for now) but we know there is hardwood under it too, so perhaps a future project…

Now apparently we have a lot of furniture/dressers to fit into this space.  Ironically Matt & I had iKea furniture that was destined to be together without us even trying, giving us a plethora of iKea black/brown dressers.  Here is the lineup:

 2 iKea Malm 3-Drawer Chests – color black/brown

1 iKea Malm 6-Drawer Chest – color black/brown

1 rogue iKea black/brown Chest that we found at a garage sale (I can’t seem to find it on their website)

1 Vanity (Craigslist find)

We are planning to somehow use the 2 matching dressers for an island in the closet since our overall plan is to have hanging clothes around the perimeter to make the best use of space.  Here are some inspirational closet islands I love:

In the last few weeks at our old house, I took a detailed inventory of our previous closet to figure out how much space we currently took up and where we’d like more.  Our previous closet was spacious by typical closet-standards, but lacked organization to, well- my standards 🙂  Plus the hangers were so tight you couldn’t sort through (pet peeve).

I categorized and measured the width needed for each category, here are my {OCD} notes:

I know what you’re thinking, jeez, Matt is so greedy needing all his space compared to me 🙂

More to come as we continue to plan the layout and work through the details.  Our clothes are just dying for a place in our new home!

Cheers!
